You've Got Mail Task

The List

Out of these amazing studios/places for potential placements, instead of one I chose 3 as I was intrigued to learn more about the local studios. Ones unticked/not contacted are ones that are out of range for me to visit.

The Archipelago

The Archipelagos illustrative take on design is really fun and something I see myself investing in more and more. I wanted to visit studios that aren't all completely branding and digital based as for me as a designer this could get quite boring. A studio like this has an imaginative and vibrant identity which I would enjoy to experience.

Split Studios

What caught my eye with Split studios was their portfolio which included working on vinyl sleeves, their print designs, and variety of clients in which they represent through various mediums of design work, not all digital based which I am interested to learn from.

Endless City Studios

Have actually met one of the trio, Aaron, through networking and I really admire their mix of music/charity works and their experimentation with projections at events. They do a lot of really experimental poster designs which I love doing! I am intrigued to see what their studio is like and interested to learn more about their journey in to becoming graphic designers and how they have found work that is so fun and yet meaningful.

EP Artwork task UPDATE

A music artist named Okkoto in Leeds who wants to release an upcoming EP of b-sides asked me to create a cover for this based on this image but drawn up in my own style, based on artwork I have posted online.

'I wanted to incorporate the feeling of/notions of spirituality and distance from day to day life when making music, and thought that having some kind of mystical thought provoking cover would encapsulate that well' - Okkoto

I was determined to adjust to the graphics tablet more this year as it saves a lot of time, instead of scanning in a drawing and going over.

Creating online portfolio

As well as continuously adding all my artwork to my design Instagram, I realise this year for placement and internship opportunities, even live briefs, I need to create a professional Behance portfolio and a Linkedin.

A huge part of my PPP this year will be adding new projects and professionally photographing, but also previous projects that I can see now need to be improved and reprinted. This includes my 'Get Lit' neon book from last year which I was gutted about in the end production result. Also, my first year zine which showcased my favourite female Instagram illustrators (which I see the interest in female zines came about). The interview posters from last years PPP need to be printed again, and other various projects such as my children's colour piece from first year and help and advice pieces.

Getting as much work up on these that I see something in, adding in order to show my development as a designer over the three years is an exciting prospect for my future and this year I really want to create a professional presence online.

I plan to reprint older projects within the next month and book a photography studio, and then continue this throughout the year. Behance was started today- exciting!

Writing the briefs

Background considerations
Audience, where it is advertised/shown, the company/brand

Mandatory requirements
What they have asked for specifically

Deliverables
Support and research
Putting myself out there this year and getting primary research is so important especially with subject matters I am working with

Collectives to contact

I look to female creatives/collectives who as well as being artists want to mentor and engage with others by putting events on as this kind of system is amazing to me and like feedback crit sessions, you can truly all benefit and support each other from getting together to create and discuss.

Two collaborators who mentor also, found on 'The Dot' network, have worked with Vice

Mancnubian Collective
Going for more local collectives is amazing as the North is thriving in creativity and can try and meet them face to face. Contacing girls that gig is a different aspect of the creative industry but the same collective principles still apply and I really want to work with musicians

Girl Gang Leeds, attend events keep submitting to calls for work

IAM Collective

'This was the event by the name of ‘LCA x LCM’. It promised  a principal that Leeds College of Art and Leeds College of Music collaborated to present unity in the creative arts.'

The Girl Effect
their work goes international and more in to the roots of why support for women is so important

Girl Talk event hosted by 'Girl Gang Leeds'

Questions- I will use this session proactively to get as much feedback and quotes to use for my briefs and critical writing.

Ask about...
-Women in the design industry the current state, their opinions as being part of the demographic
-Quotes for the self empowerment series about overcoming insecurities
-Ask about the female collective scene, who they love and who inspires them...this can then lead to other networking/contacting/inspiration

Update: Unfortunately due to having to work I got there 2 hours before it ended and the groups I were put next to didn't have a lot to offer me/ran out of time, however I got a link to 'She Does Digital' which actually have stats on women in industry and to talk to one of their team. Got quotes from one girl for two projects which I was so grateful for! Girl Gang have also let me share my survey link on their page which will hopefully bring in more feedback for my empowerment brief.

Online Zines

https://blog.missguided.co.uk/

A different way of designing and distributing content without printing- in accordance with my initial idea of creating a self empowerment series of interviews/photography/collage. Having this content online would be key in being readily available for a younger audience and become a positive part of social media which is predicted as the reason for such a surge in mental health problems in the last decade.

Sites such as Missguided and Prettylittlething hugely popular with the young female audience I will be targetting, have begun to use 'girl power' themes using certain pop culture language and editing to be as relatable as possible to the audience and therefore selling well.

The 'BabeZine' is an online blog but is arranged in a way that makes it look so much more fun and interactive than what comes to mind with a long drawn out 'blog'.

It is evident with huge companies using these styles they are prevalent and by making positive changes such as seeing more normal models not being labelled as 'curvy/plus size' the industry is slowly on track to making a difference.

'women's self-publishing zine scene is one of the most exciting creative hotbeds of the moment'
https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/evx89e/take-an-exclusive-look-inside-typical-girls-zine

Zines since the breakthrough in the early 90s have always intended to be a safe space for women to share their stories and work which is what I love about them.

Need feedback on this but a way for this blog to intergrate in to someones regular use of social media would be through platforms such as Snapchat or Instagram.
